For Halloween this year, Lily went as Mary Poppins. Late in September, I gave her a choice between a princess, a butterfly, or Mary Poppins. (I thought that just asking "what do you want to be" might overwhelm her.) Initially, she said princess, but when we went to a fabric store to scope things out, she saw the white shimmery section and said, dramatically, "I want a white dress just like Mary Poppins!"
So Greenie, one of my grandmothers, worked her sewing magic and made Lily a white dress inspired by the Jolly Holiday segment from the Disney Mary Poppins. We had only seen one option on Etsy (which cost $189!!), but Greenie blew that one out of the water. The dress was twirly, shimmery... everything a little girl could want. Greenie even made little boot covers to go over her white patent leather shoes.
Trick-or-treating in our new neighborhood was good fun. There were plenty of friendly neighbors handing out candy and plenty of kids running around enjoying it all. We learned that Lily is not big on the scary side of the holiday (she didn't go to the scary houses), nor is she big on anyone in a mask- even if it's a five year old dressed as Batman (we had to let several Batmen, Thors, and Darth Vaders pass us so that Lily would walk comfortably). But on the whole, she had a great night. She got so much candy that she had a hard time carrying her little owl treat bag, but she did not trust anyone else to do it for her. Finally, Matt persuaded her to let him dump it into another bag with the promise that she could fill it up again. So at the next house, instead of saying "Trick or Treat," she gave them her now-empty bag and said, "You need to fill it up." Later, when we were joined by cousin Dylan, she got into the habit of saying "Trick or Treat!" and then, after the person gave her candy, adding "And one for the Dill Pick!" As you can see from the pictures below, it was, in truth, quite a Jolly Holiday.

What a PERFECT representation of the chalk painting dress! Very impressive :-) So sad we didn't get to see it in person - I bet there was lots of prancing around and spinning and fun bits that didn't get reported, but I'm enjoying imagining Lily Poppins twinkling down the street.
